The Top 10 Health Benefits of Royal Jelly

10. Antioxidant Power

Antioxidants are all the rage today and for good reason. When your cells oxidize, YOU oxidize and that leads to greater instances of cancer, heart disease and other degenerative conditions.

We’ve all seen a peeled apple turn brown within minutes – well, that is literally what happens to your cells over your lifetime. But scientists have discovered certain foods have massive amounts of antioxidants that slow and even stop this process.

Royal Jelly just so happens to be one of these foods. As reported in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry in 2008, Royal Jelly contains very high amounts of several antioxidants.

And what the scientists learned was that RJ had higher amounts of these antioxidants when the Royal Jelly was fresher. So when buying RJ, ensure that you are buying fresh, frozen product to maximize the vitality of the product.

9. Immune Modulator

Because Royal Jelly is being indicated to have immuno-modulatory potential for humans, a group of scientists at the University of the Ryukyus in Japan undertook a study to determine whether RJ could alter the development of systemic autoimmunity in mice.

Autoimmunity is a state in which the body’s immune system attacks itself. Disease like Rheumatoid Arthritis and many allergies are autoimmune disorders.

These mice were genetically predisposed to get Lupus, a serious auto immune disorder.

During the study, the scientists found that the mice getting the RJ supplement saw a significant delay in getting Lupus and once they did get it, lived significantly longer than the mice that didn’t get the supplement.

And while humans aren’t mice, this study certainly supports the many testimonials of people who have reported using Royal Jelly to boost or balance their immune systems that I’ve encountered.

8. Brain Function Enhancement

Our customers and client often tell us how they experience a mild euphoria or feeling of clarity upon taking our high quality, fresh royal jelly.

Now a study out of Gifu Pharmaceutical University in Japan has shed some light on why this happens.

Scientists fed rats a toxic compound designed to kill brain cells and then gave them Royal Jelly. They found that not only did royal jelly protect the brain, but it also stimulated cognitive function and repair to the brain.

When I first read this study, these results made tremendous sense to me. I had always felt that I was more alert and ‘awake’ when taking royal jelly. But I’d usually just shrug it off as perhaps a placebo effect or just a good sleep that night! Now I know that royal jelly was enhancing my brain and it wasn’t just ‘all in my head.’

7. Liver Protection

To be honest, I was not aware that Royal Jelly had liver protective abilities until I read this study. And don’t ever underestimate the importance of keeping your liver healthy – everything you ingest goes through it to be filtered. So your liver is ultra important to your overall health.

Believe me – I’ve met many people with toxic or impaired livers and it is a very challenging health situation which can often lead to liver cancer. Simply drinking tap water today will expose your liver to over 200 toxic compounds alone. This makes the protective effects of Royal Jelly even more important.

Scientists at University of Erciyes in Turkey fed royal jelly to mice that had been given a liver toxin. They found that the administration of royal jelly as a liver protective agent for only 7 days exhibited a marked protective effect on liver tissue from the liver toxin.

6. Inflammation

A tremendous amount of research is now showing that chronic inflammation is one of the root causes of heart disease and other degenerative diseases such as Alzheimers disease, arthritis and even some cancers.

A group of scientists at Hayashibara Biochemical Laboratories in Japan decided to test the anti-inflammatory activity of Royal Jelly. They tested for pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-6, and IL-1. High levels of these compounds indicate high levels of inflammation.

The scientists found that the administration of Royal Jelly suppressed these pro-inflammatory compounds and concluded that RJ has anti-inflammatory actions.

So, if you have a history of heart disease or Alzheimer’s disease in your family or better yet, you’ve had your IL-6 levels tested by your doctor and they are elevated, Royal Jelly is likely an excellent supplement for you.

5. Skin Healing

Scientists at the Department of Pharmacology, Nihon University in Japan set out to discover whether or not Royal Jelly can augment wound healing.

They fed rats various amounts of royal jelly daily and found that it showed anti-inflammatory activity by decreasing exudation and collagen formation.  Royal Jelly also shortened the healing period of skin lesions, enough so that the scientists stated that royal jelly is able to augment wound healing.

This comes as no surprise to those of us who have used royal jelly for skin health over the years. Royal Jelly contains specific nutrients and vitamins that support skin renewal such as flavonoids, nucleic acid, decanoic acid, enzymes, and hormones.

It also contains numerous vitamins and minerals such as vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, acetyl-choline and zinc, all of which are excellent for the skin. Studies indicate that the acids found in Royal Jelly contribute to its collagen production and promotion.

Take three 500 mg capsules daily or one quarter teaspoon of fresh royal jelly powder per day to optimize your skin health.

4. Diabetes and Blood Sugar Control

Earlier studies have shown that royal jelly has insulin-like activity. However, there have so far been no clinical trials to support these findings. So, a group of German doctors at the Justus-Liebig University Hospital in Germany had twenty volunteers undergo the standardized oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and afterwards a second OGTT after ingestion of 20 g of royal jelly.

The doctors found that after 2 hours, the serum sugar levels of the 20 volunteers were much lower after taking the 20 g of Royal Jelly than when they didn’t take it.

So, if you have any type of blood sugar issue, try supplementing with RJ. (if you are on insulin or Metformin, make sure you monitor your levels carefully – RJ will reduce your sugars)

3. Osteoporosis & Bone Loss

A group of Japanese scientists hypothesized that Royal Jelly may have beneficial effects on osteoporosis.

After conducting a study on both rats and in a test tube, the doctors found that RJ may prevent osteoporosis by enhancing intestinal calcium absorption, making it an effective preventative aid for osteoporosis.

It makes a lot of sense to supplement with Royal Jelly along with your calcium and vitamin D if you are suffering from osteoporosis or have a history of it in your family. According to this study, RJ will enhance your body’s ability to absorb the calcium and in turn deposit it in your bone structure.

2. Breast Cancer

A group of scientists at Kyushu University in Japan looked at the protective effect of Royal Jelly on breast cancer cells.

In the study, the scientists found an anti-environmental estrogen effect of royal jelly. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental estrogen found in many plastics that stimulates the proliferation of human breast cancer MCF-7 cells.

The study found that Royal jelly inhibited the growth promoting effect of BPA on breast cancer MCF-7 cells, even though it did not affect the proliferation of cells in the absence of BPA.

We are all exposed to dozens of cancer causing environmental estrogens every day now through our drinking water, our cosmetics, plastics and our food. You may be wise to protect yourself from these cancers with a daily dose of fresh royal jelly.

#1 Health Benefit of Royal Jelly…

A group of researchers in Japan decided to examine the effects of Royal Jelly on blood cholesterol levels in 15 volunteers.

They gave half the volunteers 6 grams of Royal Jelly per day for 4 weeks. Those taking the RJ saw their total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) decreased significantly compared with those who didn’t get the RJ. HDL (the good cholesterol) levels didn’t change in either group, nor did triglyceride levels.

So, it appears that Royal Jelly lowers bad cholesterol and total cholesterol while not harming good cholesterol levels.  If your doctor is telling you to get your cholesterol levels down, perhaps Royal Jelly is a safer, natural option for you.

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • Royal jelly refers to the substance produced by the hypopharyngeal glands of nurse bees, which is then used as the only food source of the queen bee
  • Royal jelly contains high amounts of essential vitamins and minerals. It contains all of the B vitamins, pantothenic acid and trace amounts of vitamin A, C, D and E
  • Royal jelly has been used for improving hair health and promoting hair growth. This is due to the high biotin content, a vitamin that promotes the production of keratin

What Is Royal Jelly?

Royal jelly refers to the substance produced by the hypopharyngeal glands of nurse bees, which is then used as the only food source of the queen bee. This substance can be found in larval cells, where the bee larvae are partially submerged in royal jelly for sustenance for the first three days of life.1 These bees are usually weaned from royal jelly upon maturation and start eating pollen and honey, with only the queen larvae staying on a pure royal jelly diet to promote her fertility.

Before royal jelly was used as a supplement, it was utilized for a variety of traditional uses, including promotion of hair growth and wrinkle reduction. Some people have claimed that it can also help prolong life, the same way it’s supposedly able to increase the lifespan of the queen bee.

In Chinese medicine, royal jelly is revered as a substance that helps increase life expectancy, prevent disease and restore youth. Because of its popularity in China, the country is still one of the largest producers of this supplement.2

The composition of royal jelly was found to be a mixture of water, collagen, and numerous enzymes and hormones. Because of these components, it’s fair to assume that royal jelly is in fact beneficial for humans. Nowadays, royal jelly can be bought from numerous sources in the market as fresh royal jelly, capsules or powder.3

Royal Jelly’s Potential Health Benefits

Royal jelly contains high amounts of essential vitamins and minerals. It contains all of the B vitamins, pantothenic acid and trace amounts of vitamin A, C, D and E.4 Here are some potential benefits you can get from a royal jelly supplement:5

May improve skin health — Taking royal jelly as a supplement may help boost collagen production, which is essential for promoting healthier and younger skin. It can help boost wound healing as well if applied topically.6 Royal jelly also increases skin moisture, which may benefit patients with dry and damaged skin.7

Assists in blood pressure regulation — In a 2004 study, it was found that royal jelly contains certain peptides that have antihypertensive properties. Patients who suffer from hypertension may benefit from royal jelly supplementation, as it helps normalize high blood pressure.8

Supports fertility — Taking royal jelly regularly may help regulate hormone levels in the body, with people suffering from hormone imbalance benefitting more from this. Royal jelly may help improve the quality of women’s egg cells, which then increases their chances of getting pregnant.9 Royal jelly may benefit men as well, by promoting testosterone level increases.

Reduces premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms — Royal jelly has the ability to mimic human estrogen, which is important for an improved menstrual cycle.10 In a 2014 study,11 females were given royal jelly supplements to deter the effects of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). The results of the study show that royal jelly can help minimize the symptoms of PMS.

Assists in diabetic ulcer healing — Diabetics are at high risk of suffering from ulcers in various parts of their body. This is usually characterized by slow healing and an increased risk for infection. Studies suggest that the application of royal jelly on diabetic ulcers can help with faster complete skin restoration.12

What Are the Other Ways You Can Use Royal Jelly?

Aside from being a nutritional supplement, royal jelly can also be used in numerous ways, including for cosmetic applications. Some of these include:

Hair care — Royal jelly has been used for improving hair health and promoting hair growth. This is due to the high biotin content, a vitamin that promotes the production of keratin. There are numerous hair products in the market that incorporate royal jelly for this specific reason.

However, be wary of the authenticity of the products you’ll be using because there are some brands that only claim to contain royal jelly.13

Skin care — Royal jelly is believed to have anti-aging, anti-wrinkle and wound healing properties because of its high collagen content, which is essential for skin renewal. You can either take it orally or apply it topically to receive its benefits. It can also be used as an acne treatment or sunscreen.14

Check Out These Royal Jelly Studies

The mystery behind royal jelly’s ability to transform a normal larva to a queen bee has caused numerous studies to be done on this area and the possible effects it may have on humans. Studies done on royal jelly have focused on its potential effects on cancer, fertility and its role in testosterone production.

In a study done in Iraq,15 infertile men were given different dosages of royal jelly and honey to increase the production of testosterone. After three months, the men who were given royal jelly had higher testosterone levels, improved sperm active motility and luteinizing hormone levels, thus showing the potential impact royal jelly can have on infertility in men.

In a 2014 study,16 royal jelly was also found to help with reducing the symptoms of mucositis in patients suffering from neck and head cancer. Mucositis refers to the inflammation of the digestive tract brought on by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Patients who were given royal jelly thrice a day showed a decreased occurrence of mucositis.

How Much Royal Jelly Is Safe to Take?

There are numerous ways to get your daily dose of royal jelly. You can get your supply in either powder or tablet form, but beekeepers and apitherapists say that the best way is by taking it fresh under the tongue. Putting it under the mouth and letting it melt there will speed up its absorption into the blood. This is better than swallowing it, as the digestive enzymes might deactivate some of the components of royal jelly.17

If you got your hands on royal jelly tablets, you can benefit from this substance by taking 50 to 300 milligrams daily. If you have the fresh kind or royal jelly powder, you can take roughly 6 grams per day. It is safe to take a 1/8-1/4 teaspoon daily. This will help with vibrant health and longevity.

Overview Information

Royal jelly is a milky secretion produced by worker honey bees. It typically contains about 60% to 70% water, 12% to 15% proteins, 10% to 16% sugar, 3% to 6% fats, and 2% to 3% vitamins, salts, and amino acids. Its composition varies depending on geography and climate. This product gets its name from the fact that bees use it for the development and nurturing of queen bees. Some people use royal jelly as medicine. Don’t confuse royal jelly with bee pollen or bee venom.

Royal jelly is used for asthma, hay fever, liver disease, pancreatitis, type 2 diabetes, diabetic foot ulcers, sleep troubles (insomnia), fatigue (tiredness) secondary to cancer, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), infertility (inability to have a child), menopausal symptoms, stomach ulcers, kidney disease, bone fractures, menopausal symptoms, skin disorders, and high cholesterol. It is also used as a general health tonic, for fighting the effects of aging, and for boosting the immune system.

Some people apply royal jelly directly to the skin as a tonic or to the scalp to encourage hair growth.

How does it work?

There is very little scientific information available about the effects of royal jelly in people. In animals, royal jelly seems to have some activity against tumors and the development of “hardening of the arteries.”

Effective for

  • Menopausal symptoms. Early research shows that taking royal jelly by mouth for 3 months can increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good”) cholesterol and decrease low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad”) cholesterol in postmenopausal women. Other research shows that taking a product containing royal jelly and flower pollen by mouth for 12 weeks can reduce menopausal symptoms and improve feelings of well-being in menopausal women. Another product containing royal jelly, evening primrose oil, damiana, and ginseng also seems to decrease menopausal symptoms. Applying royal jelly in the vagina may improve quality of life and sexual problems in menopausal women similarly to intravaginal estrogen. But applying estrogen inside the vagina seems to reduce vaginal inflammation in menopausal women better than royal jelly.
  • Tiredness in people with cancer. Early research shows that taking a mixture of processed honey and royal jelly twice daily for 4 weeks improves feelings of tiredness in some people with cancer.
  • Diabetes. Some research shows that taking royal jelly by mouth once daily for 8 weeks improves average blood sugar and blood insulin levels in people with diabetes. But other research shows that taking royal jelly as a single dose or three times daily for 8 weeks doesn’t improve blood sugar or blood insulin levels in people with diabetes.
  • Diabetic foot ulcers. Some early research shows that applying royal jelly to ulcers after cleansing and removal of dead tissue does not improve healing. But other early research shows that applying a specific ointment containing royal jelly and panthenol for up to 6 months after cleansing and removal of dead tissue may improve the healing of diabetic foot ulcers.
  • Infertility. Early research shows that applying a solution containing royal jelly, Egyptian bee honey, and bee bread to the vagina for 2 weeks may increase the rate of pregnancy in couples with fertility problems due to reduced sperm movement (asthenozoospermia).
  • High cholesterol. Early research shows that taking royal jelly by mouth might lower cholesterol levels in people with high cholesterol.
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Early research shows that taking a product containing royal jelly, bee pollen extract, and bee pollen with pistil extract by mouth for 2 menstrual cycles decreases some symptoms of PMS including irritability, weight increases, and swelling.
  • Weight loss. Research shows that taking royal jelly by mouth once daily for 8 weeks slightly decreases body weight in overweight people with diabetes. But the improvement might not be clinically meaningful.
  • Asthma.
  • Baldness.
  • Bone fractures.
  • Boosting immunity.
  • Kidney disease.
  • Liver disease.
  • Pancreatitis.
  • Skin disorders.
  • Stomach ulcers.
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia).
  • Many Other conditions.
